LOS ANGELES – CSUSB first-year head coach
Mark Peters picked up his first win in statement fashion on Monday afternoon, as his Yotes downed Cal State LA 1-0 on the road in a non-conference match.
Returning All-CCAA selection
Vidalia Abarca picked up her first goal of the season in the 27
th minute on the setup from
Sarah Savella. That was all the Yotes would need to down the Golden Eagles, who were picked third in the CCAA Preseason Poll.
"I'm very pleased to get the first win of the season, especially against such a strong side," Peters said. "The team played with a lot of confidence and showed the fighting spirit required to compete at this level. Still early days but glad to have taken a positive step in the right direction."
Carly Luna would not allow the equalizer in 90 minutes of action, making nine saves for the Yotes while facing 19 total shots. The Yotes looked to counter the remainder of the match as LA pressed forward, and turned that into four shots on goal and seven total shots. Abarca took three shots on frame and Savella added one.
The Yotes (1-1) continue a busy week, traveling to Concordia University Irvine on Wednesday before hosting Azusa Pacific on Saturday at 3 pm for their home opener.
