SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The Yotes travelled to Hayward to take on the Cal State East Bay Pioneers. It was a rollercoaster of a match with CSUSB taking the first set comfortably, 25-13, only to squeeze by the victory of the second set, 25-22. With the Pioneers giving everything they had against the Yotes, it would be CSUSB taking the CCAA win, 3-0.
The Yotes went into the first set ready to strike!
Jalyn Hayes fit her target right at the start, scoring the first three out of the first five kills for CSUSB. The Pioneers would find the unpredictability of the Yotes offense tough to stop.
Marlee Nunley would find Hayes and
Alexis Cardoza on both sides of the net. Cardoza would connect on seven kills on the first set. CSUSB collected 19 kills (.429) on the first set and Nunley had assisted on 15 of those kills. The Yotes took the first set, 25-13.
In the second set, Cal State East Bay come out to the floor with a new surge of energy. The Pioneers would make each point one that the Yotes must earn. The two teams would exchange point for point during the set, tied at 14-14 for a moment. Although CSUEB made it as difficult as they could for the Yotes, CSUSB once again collected 19 kills on the set.
Jenna Patton collected four kills as the Yotes won the set, 25-23.
The third set looked similar to the first set. This time Cardoza tallied five of the first six kills for the Yotes. Nunley found herself scoring big for CSUSB, collecting three kills on the set. The Yotes kept the Pioneers under 20 points as CSUSB took the last set and the win, 25-18.
Leading in kills for the Yotes was Cardoza who collected 17 kills and had 10 digs. Patton finished the match with nine kills, four digs, and two blocks. Hayes also finished the with nine kills as
Melissa Garciglia added eight kills of her own. Nunley found her teammates in scoring position for 39 assists on the match.
Makena Overbey led the defense for the Yotes as Overbey collected 21 digs on the match.
