SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The Yotes concluded the CCAA regular season undefeated with a record of 18-0. Cal Poly Pomona defeated San Francisco the previous night to reach the CCAA championship match. The Broncos pushed CSUSB to limits, but once the Yotes found their stride they outran the Broncos for the 2021 CCAA Championship title, 3-2.
CSUSB hit the floor ready to defend their title making quick work of the first set, 25-17. If history has shown us, the Broncos never slow their pace and they were back in the game taking the second set, 25-13.
It seemed as the Cal Poly Pomona broke the code against the Yotes as they also won the third set, 27-25. At this point the Broncos were ahead two sets to CSUSB's one set. With Cal Poly Pomona one set away from the title, the Yotes had no choice but to pull it together.
CSUSB found their stride and took the fourth set, 25-19. With the five-peat on the line, the Yotes were quick to take a five-point lead. They would hold tight to this lead and on a service ace by
Leilia To'omalatai, CSUSB won their fifth consecutive CCAA Championship Tournament.
Leading in kills for the Yotes was
Alexis Cardoza who collected 19 kills and had 10 digs.
Jalyn Hayes connected for 12 digs and had two blocks.
Melissa Garciglia added nine points of her own and had seven digs.
Jenna Patton had a block party, collecting eight points, seven blocks and four digs.
Asia Clarke was on target for eight kills and had nine digs.
Marlee Nunley lead CSUSB in both service aces and assist tallying four service aces and 43 assists.
Makena Overbey led the Yotes in digs as she collected 21 digs and had three service aces.
Four Yotes made it onto the CCAA Tournament All-Team. Hayes, Patton, Overbey, Nunley, and Cardoza who also won the CCAA Tournament MVP were recognized at the end of the match.
CSUSB is waiting on NCAA West Region selections to see if the Yotes will host the 2021 West Region Championships. The West Regional will be held from December 2
nd - December 4th.
