POMONA – The No. 15 CSUSB Coyotes suffered a setback in their CCAA opener on Thursday night, falling 2-3 at Cal Poly Pomona.
Kevin Aguilar scored both goals for the Yotes, on an assist from Jonathan Garcia in the 15th minute and a penalty kick in the 77th minute. Following the PK which made it 2-3, the Yotes got three shots off over the final 13 minutes but could not find the equalizer.
"CSUSB vs. CPP games are fast becoming one of the most entertaining games on the CCAA schedule every year," CSUSB head coach Darren Leslie said. "Both teams showed moments of brilliance in the middle to attacking third which made for an exciting game for the neutral. From our point of view, we have to hold our hands up and accept that we were uncharacteristically sloppy at key moments which cost us the game. I still felt we did more than enough to get something from the game, but credit to Matt and his staff who have done an excellent job turning things around after a tough start to the season. His team played well tonight."
The Broncos had led 3-1 when they scored in the 73rd minute. CSUSB led in shots, 15-9, led by Frank Daroma who had two on frame. The Coyotes will continue CCAA action next Friday at 3 pm at CSU San Marcos. Live links are on CSUSBathletics.com.
