ARCATA, Calif. – A missed Humboldt State dunk bounced out to a three-point shooter with 20 seconds left and a made three saw HSU seize the late lead and beat CSUSB on Saturday night, 49-53.
The Yotes had two-point lead and a free throw with under two minutes left, but did not score again as they turned the ball over on the inbounds following the three, and were called for an illegal screen down 49-52. Daytone Jennings led with 20 points and Garrett Baggett added 11. Jennings was one rebound short of the double-double.
Neither team shot the ball well, but CSUSB led on the boards, 48-41, but the difference came as HSU made eight more foul shots. The first half was extremely tight throughout and HSU led 21-25 after a buzzer-beating three. The Yotes came storming into the second half and by the 8:50 mark led 40-32 on a tip-in from Andres Villa. HSU tied by the three-minute mark, 45-45, but a twisting jumper from Naradain James gave them the two-point edge they would carry into the final 20 seconds.
The Yotes (15-11, 11-9 CCAA) will look to build a winning streak into the postseason, starting at home against Stanislaus State at 3 pm for Senior Day next Saturday. Live links are available on CSUSBathletics.com.
