Yotes Fall In NCAA Quarterfinals

Cap best season in D2 program history

LOS ANGELES – The best season in program NCAA Division II history came to an end on Saturday night at Cal State LA, as the Yotes historic run ended with a 2-0 defeat in the NCAA Quarterfinals.

The Yotes, who put together an incredible tournament run, led the match in shots on goal, 7-6, but two LA goals before the 28th minute set them up for the result.  Jeronimo Valdapena put a shot on frame in the eighth minute to try for the early lead, but LA struck quickly after that.

Frank Daroma had two shots on goal to lead the squad.  The season ends at 14-4-3 and the postseason run was truly one to remember.  The Yotes entered the NCAA Tournament having never won a Division II Tournament match, and won two before falling in the quarterfinals.

"Congratulations first of all to Coach Chamides, his staff and his players on their West Region Championship victory this evening. I said earlier in the year that I believed Pomona, CSUSB and CSULA were the clear top three teams in the West Region and I think tonight LA showed that they are a cut above," CSUSB head coach Darren Leslie said.  "We are obviously disappointed at the goals we conceded. Defensively we were out of position on the first goal, and the second goal came after we were late on pressing cues higher up the field. For a team that has been so water tight defensively this year, it was desperately disappointing to give up two goals that easy. With that said, I felt we had two golden opportunities to score in both halves of the game and at least another 2-3 half chances which on another day end up in the back of the net. At the end of the day, when you are playing against the best teams in the nation, you need to capitalize on those opportunities and tonight it wasn't meant to be. I am beyond proud of the effort of our young men this season and we will return even hungrier for success next year."

The Yotes return a good mix of underclassmen and graduate five seniors who left the program in the rarified air it had never reached before.
