LOS ANGELES – The CSUSB Coyotes continued their historic season on Thursday afternoon with a thrilling come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Colorado School of Mines on the campus of Cal State LA in the NCAA Tournament Third Round.
Less than two weeks removed from their first NCAA Tournament win at the Division II level, the Yotes added another with great theatrics. Trailing 1-0 into the 78
th minute,
Frank Daroma finished in the far post as he broke free after being setup by
Jesus Ortega. With just five minutes left in the first 90,
Pedro Arellano headed home a pass from Daroma just over the keeper's head for the game winner.
"First of all, congratulations to CSM on an excellent season. It's never easy to lose at this point in the year, but I'm sure once they have an opportunity to reflect on the season they will be proud of their accomplishments," head coach
Darren Leslie said. "That is exactly how I feel about our group tonight. I am immensely proud of the effort and the never say die attitude we showed to come back from a goal down and go on and win the game. I also want to take a moment to thank all of our supporters who have been incredible during this playoff run. We look forward to seeing them all again on Saturday and we hope to give them another moment to be proud of this team!"
The Yotes had controlled the offensive pace leading in shots on goal, 8-4, with
Jacob Huber making three saves for the Yotes.
Gerardo Flores put one on frame in the 38
th minute for CSUSB's best scoring chance in the first half. The Yotes had two shots on target before the Orediggers pulled ahead in the 60
th minute.
The Coyotes are now in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals and one of eight remaining teams in the country. They are one win away from advancing to the NCAA Final site in Pittsburgh, December 12-14.
The Yotes will now move on to face the winner of Cal State LA and St. Mary's (TX) on Saturday night at 6 pm on the campus of CSULA. Live links are available on CSUSBathletics.com.
