AUSTIN, Texas – Fresh off leading her No. 1 CSUSB Coyotes to a West Regional Championship, junior outside hitter
Alexis Cardoza has been honored as a 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-American.
The D2CCA and AVCA West Region and CCAA Player of the Year has led CSUSB to a 30-0 record and the top seed at the NCAA Finals which begin with the quarterfinals on Thursday from Denver. The psychology major leads the CCAA and ranks third in Division II with 5.07 points per set and is also third nationally with 4.46 kills per set, adding 2.93 digs and 0.51 blocks per set to go along with 34 service aces.
Just as impressive is her 3.69 GPA she holds while pursueing her degree in the aforementioned field of psychology. Additionally, on the court, Cardoza is fifth in the nation hitting .339, playing in every set this season.
"Thank you so much to CoSIDA for recognizing all the hard work I put in off and on the court," Cardoza said. "I think all student-athletes could attest to how difficult it is to balance school and sports. So, without sounding pretentious, I have to say, I'm very proud of myself. Also, thank you to my parents for the sacrifice they made in order to provide me with a solid academic foundation, and to my "smarty-pants" sister for inadvertently pushing me to work hard."
Cardoza is one of just two CCAA student-athletes to earn the honor and is just the second Academic All-American in program history, joining Amy Pope who was honored in 2001.
Cardoza and the Yotes hit the road for Denver on Tuesday with a quarterfinal date set with Molloy on Thursday at 6:30 pm PST. Live links will be on CSUSBathletics.com.
