SAN FRANCISCO – In their first game following a week off for finals week, the CSUSB Coyotes traveled to the Bay Area for a non-conference matchup with Academy of Art, and won 85-71.
Jordan Mitchell led the way with 20 points on nine-of-10 shooting.
Andres Villa added 14 and
Daytone Jennings scored 11 to go with eight rebounds.
Jeremy Smith added 10 with five assists and
Shea Rax was the fifth Coyote in double figures with 12.
Richard Laku led the team with nine boards, a category they led 37-27.
The Yotes shot 50 percent from the field and 45 percent from three. The Coyotes got up 13 more shots than Academy of Art and shot a higher percentage from the field.
"I am really proud of our team tonight, it was fun to see our guys come together on the road, fight through some adversity, and come out on top," head coach
Andy Newman said. "That is a really well-coached team at Academy of Art and we had to play our best to get that one.
Shea Rax was huge for us in the first half, and was the catalyst that broke things open for us."
CSUSB jumped out to a lead but AAU kept it close, before the Yotes closed the first half on a 22-8 run over the final seven minutes to lead 46-29 at half. The lead was as big as 28 in the second half and the Coyotes were never threatened.
