SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – They aren't always pretty and CSUSB's Saturday afternoon 70-67 win over Cal Poly Pomona wasn't, but a win it was nonetheless and all CCAA ones are important.
The Yotes were able to get stops late in the second half and build some distance to eventually secure the win. Andres Villa had another great night with 19 points and 11 rebounds on 80 percent shooting. Garrett Baggett added 18, Naradain James scored a big basket late and ended with 13, and Justice Green scored 12.
The Coyotes ran out of the gates up 9-2, but ended up fighting back late in the half and with a layup from James took a 30-29 lead into the half. The Coyotes built a 10-point lead midway through the second half, fought off three charges from the Broncos, and the layup from James put them up six with under a minute to play on a crucial possession. A hectic finish saw the Broncos get a last-second heave to tie.
"We came together in the second half to rebound, defend, and play as a team to get this one," Green said.
The Yotes dominated the glass again, 42-27, and in the paint, 38 points to 20. That effectiveness in the paint led to 48.9 percent shooting for the Coyotes (9-5, 5-3 CCAA). They host CSU Monterey Bay at 7:30 pm on Thursday night. Live links are available on CSUSBathletics.com.
