Big 2nd inning pays off

HAYWARD (April 20, 2018) — The West Region's sixth-ranked Coyotes earned a split in their CCAA doubleheader Friday, losing 5-0 in the opener and coming back with a 10-8 win in the second against Cal State East Bay.

The teams finish the weekend series Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.

Game 1: CSUEB 5, Coyotes 0
CSUSB fell behind early, giving up a run in the first, and could not get on track offensively in the opener.

The Coyotes had just four hits — including a double from senior Monica Maddox — and left five runners on base.

On the positive side, junior Morgan Ratliff had two stolen bases and became CSUSB's all-time leading base stealer. She now had 75, two more than Anne Cordaro (1987-90).

Game 2: CSUSB 10, CSUEB 8
The Coyotes grabbed an early lead, thanks to an eight-run second and held off the Pioneers in improving to 24-16 overall and 14-14 CCAA.

Sydney Kreimann led with a solo home run in the fourth, and a run-scoring double in the second. Ratliff had a 3-for-5 game, with Jamiana Gateb and Taylor Ancona joining Kreimann with two hits.

Kendra O'Cull earned the victory and improved her record to 9-5 after 3.2 innings of relief. She had two strikeouts.
