SAN BERNARDINO (March 4, 2018) — Apparently, the Coyotes just needed the CCAA season to begin.
CSUSB took three of four games from Cal State East Bay and pushed its conference record to 5-3 after winning 13-11 and 9-8 over the Pioneers on Sunday at Fiscalini Field. CSUSB, now 5-9 overall, takes on Cal State Dominguez Hills this week, beginning Thursday in Carson.
Game 1: Coyotes 13, CSU East Bay 11
The Coyotes relied upon
Anthony Ortega to be their hero for the hour after he hit a three-run, walk-off home run that lifted the Coyotes to victory.
Down 11-10,
Ty Lineberger and
Shawn Porthan sandwiched walks around a sacrifice bunt from
Jacob Allen. Ortega then came up and answered with a shot over the left-field wall. He flew around the bases, and then just before he touched home, he ripped off his helmet and then met an onslaught of teammates who were more than ready to share in his joy.
Mando Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and both
Tyler Robles and Erik Allegro had two hits and two RBI.
Starter RHP
Matthew Moriarty went six innings in a no-decision. He had eight strikeouts. Reliever
Noah Simon had two strikeouts in two innings.
Game 2: Coyotes 9, CSU East Bay 8
Starter
Konner Arnold threw 6 1/3 innings, striking out seven and scattering 10 hits to improve his record to 2-0.
CSUSB led 6-0 after scoring five runs in the second.
Gabe Chavez and
Garrett Ouellette each had two-run hits that keyed the inning.
Leading 9-3 through six innings, CSUEB answered back with five runs and helped by Dallas Dey's grand slam. But with a runner on second, reliever
Dylan Stablein struck out Paul Bryniarski to end the game. It was his first save of the season.
Chavez went 5-for-5 with four RBI and
Ty Lineberger went 3-for-3.
