SAN BERNARDINO (February 9, 2018) — Good pitching stops good hitting as the Coyotes were swept by No. 21 Chico State on Friday, losing 4-0 and 4-3.
The losses snapped the Coyotes' five-game winning streak, while the Wildcats improved to 7-0. The doubleheader was the CCAA opener for both teams.
The two teams complete the weekend Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. at Coyote Park.
Game 1: Chico State 4, Coyotes 0
Senior All-American RHP Haley Gilham was perfect through 3 2/3 innings and limited to the Coyotes to just two hits. CSUSB's
Jessica Brown broke up Gilham's perfect bid with a single up the middle in the fourth. The Coyotes, who trailed 1-0, loaded the bases with
Caitlyn Olan (walk) and
Dominique Walker (single), but couldn't cash in.
Karli Skowrup had a two-run double in the fifth and Claire Wayne led off the Chico State sixth with a home run.
Game 2: Chico State 4, Coyotes 3
CSUSB trailed 4-0 through four innings before they got on the board and made things interesting.
Walker broke up CSUSB's Friday scoreless streak with a towering home run to center in the fifth. It her first this season.
In the seventh, Brown clubbed a one-out, two-run homer to close within a run. Walker then followed with a walk, and pinch-runner
Monica Maddox reached third on a passed ball and single by Olan.
With runners on the corners, CSUSB attempted a first-and-third, but pinch-runner
Gabriella Bracamonte was thrown at first for the second out and CSUSB stranded Maddox at third.
CSUSB, which left eight runners on base, was led by Walker's 3-for-3 effort. Brown had two hits.
