Coyotes secure split series over No. 21 CSUMB

SEASIDE (February 25, 2018) — A two-win weekend over a nationally-ranked conference foe made for an extra-special way to end the month of February with CSUSB taking the final game of its series against No. 21 Cal State Monterey Bay 3-1 on Sunday.

Getting the job done
CSUSB's Alec Ceniceros delivered his second home run of the season with the biggest shot of the young 2018 season. His two-run shot over the right-center field wall broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning and put the Coyotes in command.

Certainly not over the hill
CSUSB starter Matthew Moriarty reached the sixth inning and kept the Coyotes in the game with a solid outing. He threw 5 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits and just one run. He struck out three and overcame five base on balls. Reliever Noah Simon earned the victory in 2 1/3 innings of work with one strikeout. Will Mentzer earned his first save, retiring the side in order in the ninth.

A stat to chew on
Coyotes' pitchers gave up just one extra-base hit and danced out of trouble throughout, leaving 12 Otters left on base.

Way to go Gabe
Gabe Chavez tied the game at 1-1 on his fielder's choice RBI in the fifth that scored Ty Lineberger.

What's next
CSUSB takes its 2-8 overall record and 2-2 CCAA slate into this week's conference home series against Cal State East Bay. CSUMB fell to 8-2, 2-2.
