SAN BERNARDINO (March 2, 2018) — Cal State East Bay scored two unearned runs in the top of the ninth and held off the Coyotes in their 9-7 loss Friday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.
The turning point
CSUSB led 6-1 through four innings before the Pioneers (6-5, 3-2) picked apart the lead. Tied at 7-7 through eight, the Pioneers scored both of its runs on infield errors.
Round tripper
Anthony Ortega led off the fourth inning with a home run over the left-field wall. Four batters later,
Gabe Chavez singled in
Shawn Porthan, who reached on an infield single.
Tyler Robles also scored after
Erick Allegro singled and an error was charged to the Pioneers center fielder.
Big Day
Robles led the Coyotes, now 2-9 overall and 2-3 CCAA, with three hits — two singles and a double. Chavez, Allegro, Ortega and
Jacob Allen all had two hit days.
On the hill
Senior RHP
Garret Christiansen threw six innings and scattered seven hits, allowed five runs (four earned), struck out two and walked one. Senior RHP
Dylan Stablein took the loss in one inning of relief.
No. 9 hitter?
No. 9 Joey Rice hit a three-run home run in the sixth for the Pioneers.
