CSUSB earns split, thanks to Brown and Ramirez

CARSON (February 23, 2018) — Senior Jessica Brown clubbed a two-run home run and Dominique Walker added a two-run single as the Coyotes secured a split in Friday afternoon's CCAA doubleheader, losing the opener 3-1 and earning the second 5-0.

The Coyotes, now 9-6 overall and 4-6 CCAA, finish the weekend Saturday against the host Toros (5-10, 3-7).

Game 1: CSUDH 3, Coyotes 1
The Coyotes faced a three-run deficit through two innings before breaking through in the third.

CSUSB loaded the bases with one out before Taylor Ancona's sacrifice fly to center scored Dominique Walker, who led off the inning with a walk.

Briana Quintana doubled and Jamiana Gateb singled for the Coyotes, who left 10 runners on base.

Freshman RHP Kendra O'Cull took the hard-luck loss. After CSUDH scored its runs, O'Cull settled down and threw three scoreless innings. Her record is 3-3.

Rachael Sandoval's two-run home run led CSUDH.

Game 2: Coyotes 5, CSUDH 0
CSUSB sent seven batters to the plate in the third with Brown connecting on her team-leading fifth home run. Ratliff led off the inning with a walk, and one out later, Brown connected on a 1-0 offering from Alyssa Olague. Three batters later, Taylor Ancona doubled to right to score Gateb, who reached on a throwing error.

In the fourth, Walker delivered a one-out single to center that brought in Monica Maddox (single) and Gabriella Bracamonte (single).

On the mound, Amanda Ramirez was the definition of efficiency, walking two and giving up six hits — just one extra-base hits. She improved to 5-3.
