CARSON (February 24, 2018) — A pair of one-run games culminated in a split Saturday for CSUSB in its CCAA doubleheader at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
A four-run, six-hit fifth inning paid off as the Coyotes defeated the Toros 6-5 in the opener, but CSUDH came back for the split with a 4-3 win.
CSUSB, now 10-7 overall and 5-7 CCAA, returns to Coyote Park this weekend against Sonoma State, beginning Friday afternoon.
Game 1: Coyotes 6, CSUDH 5
Dominique Walker led the Coyotes at the plate with three hits, and teammates
Monica Maddox,
Samantha Vacko, and
Jessica Brown each had two hits in the opener.
Down 3-1, CSUSB sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth.
Taylor Ancona,
Jamiana Gateb, Vacko and Maddox — the 6-9 hitters in the Coyotes' order — all came though with RBI in the inning.
Briana Quintana's two-out double to center scored Brown, who reached on a fielder's choice — for the deciding run.
On the mound, freshman RHP
Kendra O'Cull got the victory with two strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings, while
Amanda Ramirez earned her first save of the season in an 1 1/3 inning.
Game 2: CSUDH 4, Coyotes 3
Gateb led CSUSB with three hits and Brown and Quintana each had two hits in the loss. The Coyotes left 10 runners on base.
Ramirez took the loss, going the distance with three strikeouts and two walks.
CSUDH improved to 6-11, 4-8.
