TURLOCK, Calif. – The No. 1 CSUSB Coyotes are off to the CCAA Championship after a four-set win over No. 15 Cal State LA in the CCAA Championships Semifinals from Stanislaus State.
The Coyotes rolled to their first two set wins and came storming back in set four to claim the win. CCAA Player of the Year Alexis Cardoza had a huge night with 20 kills, hitting .313. Asia Clarke added 15 digs and Hailey Jackson and Mikaela Grove had seven kills each. Jayann DeHoog dished 36 assists and Leilia To'omalatai had 25 digs.
The Yotes seized control in set one taking 11-straight points to lead 13-2 and won 25-8. It was six-straight points in set two that led the Yotes to a 25-15 win. After CSULA took set three 25-14, the Yotes refused to relinquish set four. Trailing 23-19, Cardoza rattled off four-straight kills to lead 24-23. Two kills and an ace from Cardoza ended the match 28-26.
"We focused on staying focused on ourselves when CSULA started to turn things around," CSUSB head coach Kim Cherniss said. "We did a great job, in large part thanks to Jayann, in making sure we delivered the right balls to the right hitters at the right time."
The Coyotes led in digs, 69-51, in large part to To'omalatai, and hit .233 while holding CSULA to .099.
Tomorrow night is the championship against Cal Poly Pomona at 7:30 pm, as the Coyotes are back in the title match for the fourth-straight season and chasing their third-straight title. Live links are available on csusbathletics.com.
