BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The No. 1 Coyotes moved past Chaminade in the quarterfinal round of the West Region Championships on the campus of Western Washington on Thursday afternoon, 3-0.
Alexis Cardoza was unstoppable with 20 kills on 41 attempts hitting .415. Mikaela Grove added six kills and Asia Clarke, Sascha Dominique, and Jalyn Hayes had five each. Jayann DeHoog dished 36 assists. Cardoza and Leilia To'omalatai led the way with 11 digs each. The Yotes had a huge advantage with eight aces to zero, led by four from Cardoza.
The first set was back and forth and was tied at 12. CSUSB rattled off five-straight points from that point to lead 17-12. Hayes, Dominique, and Clarke all recorded kills over that stretch. Chaminade came back to take the lead, 19-18, and extended it to 22-20. Cardoza tied the match with two-straight kills and Grove smashed one for the 23-22 edge. A great push block from Hayes fueled CSUSB to the 25-23 win.
Cardoza opened the second set with three aces in a six-point run from the Coyotes. Two kills from Cardoza fueled CSUSB as they continued to extend the lead, 19-8. The Yotes finished the set on a 9-2 run with two blocks from Hayes in that stretch to win 25-10. The Yotes methodically built a lead in set three, with an early run by Cardoza with two kills and kills from Grove and Hayes, to put CSUSB up 19-14. Chaminade came back to tie the set at 24 and took set point, but kills from Hayes and Clarke and a Chaminade error ended it 27-25.
"The chemistry I have developed with Jayann this season is amazing," Cardoza said. "I am thankful for everyone behind us backing us up as well."
The Coyotes hit .286 in the match and held Chaminade at .183, and led in digs, 48-44, and blocks, 7-5.
