POMONA, Calif. – The CSUSB Coyotes grabbed their first win of the 2018-19 season with a 67-59 win over Point Loma on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday afternoon.
The Yotes were balanced with three scorers in double figures, led by Arianna Knox with 15 points. Tehya Burroughs and Aaliyah Taylor scored 10 each, and Jamellia Clark and Tatianna Russell grabbed seven boards each. Russell was a point short of a double-double.
Point Loma led by 10 after the first quarter, 22-12, but Rachel Cain opened the second quarter with a three. PLNU maintained their lead but with three minutes left in the half CSUSB came charging. Burroughs buried a three and a jumper as CSUSB trailed 39-32 at half.
"It was a nice team effort today," head coach Susan Crebbin said. "Tehya Burroughs turned the game in the second quarter with her defense and efficient shooting. We controlled the second half and executed with good ball movement and balanced scoring down the stretch from our veterans."
That ball movement saw CSUSB take the lead at the 6:10 mark of the third quarter on a jumper from Knox. It was back and forth until a three from Taylor and layup from Kayla Bibb put CSUSB ahead by five, 50-45, with three minutes left in the quarter. Taylor nailed a three right before the end of the period to extend the lead to eight. The Sea Lions got within three in the fourth but CSUSB closed them out.
The Coyotes (1-1) head north next weekend to play Concordia (OR) and Central Washington in Ellensburg, Wash. on Friday and Saturday. Live links will be available on csusbathletics.com.
