SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In a match that stretched for two and a half hours, the No. 1 CSUSB Coyotes outlasted UC San Diego on Friday night, 3-2.
The teams traded sets with CSUSB taking sets one, three, and five. Alexis Cardoza was a workhorse for the Yotes, tallying 27 kills on 71 attempts with only eight errors to hit .268. Asia Clarke added 14 kills and Hailey Jackson had 12. Jayann DeHoog dished 65 assists and led the team with 21 digs, with her 65 assists ranking eighth all-time.
After briefly trailing in set one, the Coyotes built a 23-16 lead and won 25-21. Both teams led and had chances to win set two, but UCSD took it 28-26. CSUSB put a flurry together late to pull away and win set three, 25-20. The Coyotes had control in set four, but UCSD put a charge together and eventually won 28-26. Set five was back and forth until the final attack error from UCSD ended the match.
"We are always happy to come away from UCSD with a win," head coach Kim Cherniss said. "They are extremely tough to play at home and tonight's match was no exception. Alexis Cardoza and Sascha Dominique were huge factors in the win tonight. Alexis was so poised offensively in some really crazy rallies and Sascha was a big factor at the net blocking balls in some key junctures in the match. Jayann DeHoog was relentless on defense and had a career-high 21 digs to go with her 65 assists."
The Coyotes stay down south this weekend, facing CSU San Marcos tomorrow at 7 pm. Live links are available on csusbathletics.com.
