Goals galore in 3-1 win over Pioneers

SAN BERNARDINO (Sept. 24, 2017) — CSUSB scored a pair of second-half goals and dominated the field of play in its 3-1 win over visiting Cal State East Bay in CCAA soccer Sunday afternoon at Premier Field.

The game-winning shot
Junior Danny Ortiz was fouled inside the box and subsequently scored on the PK in 65th minute for a 2-1 Coyotes' lead. Eighteen minutes later, freshman Omari Mark displayed an athletic move where he forced the GK out and popped a shot up and over for the final margin.

One of the prettiest goals you'll ever see
CSUSB took the 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute on a masterful corner kick from Tony Lo, and resulting goal from Christian Vega. Lo lofted a high kick in front of the stripe, and Vega headed the ball in for the goal. It was Vega's initial goal of the year.

The record shows
CSUSB is now 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the CCAA, while the Pioneers are 2-6-1, 0-4.

Taking shots
Ortiz led the Coyotes with five shots and four SOG.

Nearly a shutout
CSUEB scored its only goal on an own goal in the 52nd minute.

And the winner is …
GK Jacob Huber had five saves and improved to 4-5.

Coach Says

"We came through the weekend with six points, six goals, and gave up one,'' head coach Darren Leslie said. "That's a pretty good weekend. We were slow going today. Our final pass was a little off and it felt like it was going to take a set piece or a mistake for us to get that first goal. That was a delightful goal from Christian. That was straight from our training and Christian has been close on a few of those. Again, it wasn't our best performance, but we are getting wins when we are not playing our best, and the results are really what matters most. Got a big weekend coming up and have to be ready to hit the ground running Tuesday.''
