Host Seawolves hand No. 16 Coyotes 3-1 loss

ROHNERT PARK (Sept. 16, 2017) — Twenty-three ties and 11 lead changes in the fourth set were not enough for No. 16 CSUSB in its 3-1 loss (22-25, 19-25, 25-21, 29-31) to host Sonoma State on Saturday night in CCAA volleyball.
 
The Coyotes, now 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA, make their home debut Friday night against Cal State East Bay. First serve is 7 p.m.
 
The 4th set
CSUSB never trailed by more than a one-point lead in the final set until SSU's Caiti Wiesner's kill gave the Seawolves the match at 31-29 in the fourth.
 
Nic at night
Senior OH Lauren Nicholson was unstoppable for the Coyotes with 22 kills in 52 attacks with a .346 attack percentage. The Upland senior also had a match-high 27 digs. She had eight kills in the final set with an eye-popping 13 digs in giving her squad a shot at tying the match.
 
More than holding their own
Sophomore OH Moira Murphy and junior MB Hailey Jackson each had 16 kills. Jackson led with two solo blocks and seven block assists. Murphy had one solo block.
 
Interesting stat
Sonoma State (8-3, 2-0 CCAA) had four players with double figures in kills – led by Wiesner with 19. SSU had 20 kills in the opening set and 21 in the fourth.
 
Nicely done Alexis
Freshman Alexis Cardoza had nine kills with 18 digs. She and fellow freshman Leilia To'omalatai each had two service aces. On the defensive end, Cardoza had 18 digs and To'omalatai 13.
