SAN BERNARDINO (April 21, 2017) — CSUSB made sure its stretch of success continued Friday afternoon, sweeping past San Francisco State 1-0 and 6-5 in 9 innings at Coyote Park.
Cassandra Williams spun a one-hit shutout in the opener, and she came back with four innings of stellar relief in the nightcap. She has taken control during the Coyotes' current 14-1 stretch, going 9-0 on the mound with a 1.06 ERA in 66.1 innings that includes 70 strikeouts, just nine walks along with three saves and seven complete games.
CSUSB, now 32-16 overall and 22-12 in the CCAA and Gators (19-28, 13-25) resume their four-game weekend series Saturday on Family Day. The Coyotes will honor their three seniors — Williams,
Jessica Angulo and
Caelan Smith — in a pregame ceremony.
Game 1: Coyotes 1, SF State 0
Williams needed just 69 pitches, walked only one and one hit batter with five strikeouts in a dominant performance.
She retired the first nine batters in order, and only Aryn Guzman solved the Apple Valley product when she broke up the no-hit bid with a single to right center to lead off the fourth.
All told, only one Gator reached second base for the game that last 84 minutes.
CSUSB got its only run in the second on a day where wind gusts reached well into the 30-mph range and temperatures in the low 90s.
Amanda Herrera reached base on a wind-aided infield pop-up that turned into a double. After
Taylor Ancona walked, Smith loaded the bases with a single to second. That brought up Angulo, who singled in Herrera with a base-hit through the right side.
Ashley Leffingwell had the only other base hit against SFSU's Megan Clark.
Game 2; Coyotes 6, SF State 5 10 innings
Monica Maddox earned the walk-off victory with a bases-loaded single with two outs for the sweep.
Down 4-0, the Coyotes crept back with one run in the third on a bases-loaded walk to Ancona.
In the fifth, Brianna Quintana laced a hard liner to left with the sacks full of Coyotes. Left fielder Alexis Constantino came in and had the ball in the palm of her glove, but could not fully grip the ball in. The ball popped out that allowed
Jessica Brown and Ratliff scored and the Coyotes trailed 4-3 through five.
CSUSB tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth. Leffingwell, who was on second, raced to third on a putout from shortstop Kasie Trezona. But first baseman Sara Higa's throw was off and Leffingwell scored.
Reta came back and regained the lead in the seventh on a double to center that scored pinch-runner Megan Asher.
Kaylee Gemmell, who played an outstanding defensive game at shortstop, showed pop in her bat with a lead-off homer over the left-center wall and tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh. It was her third HR of the season.
Williams, who came on in the seventh, struck out two and gave up three hits.
In the ninth,
Caitlyn Olan led off with a walk. One out later, Quintana hit a double to right center. A walk to Leffingwell loaded the bases. And with two outs, Maddox came through with the walk-off with the run-scoring single.
Both Brown and Ratliff had two hits each.
