Coyotes go 5-1 at Tourney of Champs

TURLOCK (April 2, 2017) — CSUSB walked off the field Sunday night with its season-best fifth straight victory after defeating Dominican 6-1 in continuing play at the Tournament of Champions, hosted by Stanislaus State.

The Coyotes, who earlier in the day defeated Western Washington 4-1, take a 23-15 overall record and 13-11 CCAA record into the final four weeks of regular-season play. CSUSB plays four series against teams all below it in the conference standings in its drive for postseason play. It takes on Cal State Dominguez Hills in a four-game series that begins Friday afternoon at Coyote Park.

Senior LHP Cassanda Williams was named the tourney's most outstanding pitcher after going 3-1 with one save. She threw 27 innings, tossed three complete games and shined with 35 strikeouts and only two walks.

Coyotes 4, Western Washington
Tied at 1-1, CSUSB struck wth a three-run fourth and that was enough for sophomore RHP Amanda Ramirez, who earned the win with a complete game.

CSUSB strung together three consecutive run-scoring hits from Brooke Thomas, Jessica Angulo and Monica Maddox. All three hits took place with two outs.

Angulo had  a double and a single for CSUSB. No other Coyote has multiple hits.

Coyotes 6, Dominican 1
CSUSB wasted little time, scoring two runs in the top of the first for a lead it did not relinquish. Morgan Ratliff doubled in Angulo, who led off with a single. Ratliff later scored on an error.

Ratliff secured a sac fly in the fifth that scored Thomas for a 3-0 lead. Then in the sixth, Ashley Leffingwell came off the bench with an RBI-double to center, and Angulo brought in two runs on a single to right.

Angulo went 4 for 4 on four straight singles — three to left and one to right.

Williams struck out 11, walked one and scattered five hits.
