TURLOCK (April 15, 2017) — Brooke Thomas,
Ashley Leffingwell and
Cassandra Williams came up huge in CSUSB's doubleheader sweep against Stanislaus State in CCAA softball Saturday.
Thomas ripped a two-run single in the top of the seventh, Leffingwell came up with a monumental double play and Williams shut down the Warriors in the 2-0 win in the second game.
Earlier, the Coyotes raced to a 6-0 lead in the second inning in their 6-1 win. The victories pushed CSUSB's overall record to 30-18 and 20-12 in the CCAA — an unprecedented third straight 20-win conference season in school history.
The Coyotes return to Coyote Park this weekend against San Francicsco State.
Game 1: Coyotes 6, Warriors 1
CSUSB sent eight runners to the plate in the second, scored four runs on only one hit and made the Warriors pay.
Jessica Brown pushed CSUSB's lead to 2-0 on a sac fly, and two batters later,
Kaylee Gemmell hit a two-run double to right.
Brown then added a two-run single in the first and the Coyotes remained out front.
Brown, Gemmell, and Thomas all had two hits.
On the mound, Williams stood tall striking out seven without issuing a walk. She allowed four hits.
Game 2: Coyotes 2, Warriors 0
In the seventh, Thomas broke a scoreless tie when the freshman ripped a bases-loaded single to center that brought in
Morgan Ratliff (error) and Gemmell.
But there were some nervous moments in the Stanislaus seventh. Two runners reached base on
Amanda Ramirez, and Williams, who came on in relief, then issued an intentional walk with no outs.
Deja Guzman lifted a flyball to right. Leffingwell made the play, then threw a bullet to gun down Cassidy Duke at the plate for the biggest double play of the season.
Williams then struck out pinch-hitter Deenah San Luis for the game-ending out.
Ramirez got the win in two innings of relief and improved to 13-7. Williams' save was her fifth.
The Warriors dropped to 20-17, 10-22.
