TURLOCK (April 1, 2017) -- Jessica Brown connected on her first home run in a month and a four-run first inning all added up for a Saturday sweep (victories over Notre Dame de Namur 5-3 and Simon Fraser 4-1) at the Tournament of Champions.
CSUSB takes a 21-15 overall record into Sunday's games against Western Washington and Dominican.
Game 1: Coyotes 5, Notre Dame de Namur 3
Trailing 3-0 through five innings, CSUSB came alive by sending 10 batters to the plate, scoring five runs with just three hits.
Monica Maddox and
Morgan Ratliff opened the fifth with walks, bringing up Brown.
The junior launched her eighth home run of the season -- her first since the late February series against UC San Diego -- over the left-center fence and CSUSB tied the game at 3-3.
Four batters later, freshman
Isabel Frias came through with her best moment of the season at the plate. She hit a single to right center that scored
Kaylee Gemmell (walk) and
Taylor Ancona (walk).
That was enough for Coyotes starter
Amanda Ramirez. She improved to 9-6 with five innings of seven-hit ball.
Cassandra Williams earned her third save of the season with two innings of one-hit relief.
Game 2: Coyotes 4, Simon Fraser 1
CSUSB scored all four runs in the opening frame and that was more than enough for Williams, who went the distance with five strikeouts.
In fact, not one Clan reached second base after the first inning.
Gemmell hit a two-run single to left that brought in Maddox (single) and Ratliff (single). Brown and Gemmell later scored on errors.
Ratliff and Gemmell each had two hits.
