CHICO (March 26, 2017) -- Shutout softball - one for host No. 7 Chico State and the other in favor of the Coyotes -- summarized Sunday's CCAA doubleheader.
A tough break cost the Coyotes in a 1-0 loss in the opener, and sophomore RHP
Amanda Ramirez grabbed control in the 3-0 victory.
The two teams resume their series Monday, beginning at 11 a.m.
Game 1: Wildcats 1, Coyotes 0
Chico earned the game's only run in the third. Rachel DeHart reached on a single, advanced to second on a sac bunt, and scored when Ari Marsh beat an errant throw to first on an infield single.
That was enough for the Wildcats' Haley Gilham, who did not allow one Coyote to reach past first base. She allowed three hits, struck out four and walked one. She faced just 24 batters in the seven-inning game.
Williams (10-7) also was stellar. The left-hander gave up four hits and struck out three.
Jessica Brown,
Taylor Ancona and
Caitlyn Olan all had singles against Gilham (10-2).
Game 2: Coyotes 3, Wildcats 0
Morgan Ratliff gave the Coyotes the lead for good with a two-out, bases-loaded single that brought in
Ashley Leffingwell, who reached on a fielder's choice.
In the sixth,
Kaylee Gemmell hit a two-out, two-run single up the middle that brought in
Amanda Fitzgerald and Ratliff.
Ramirez (8-5) went the distance, striking out three, walking one and giving up four hits. Only one runner reached third base.
Ratliff went 3 for 3 and Brown had two hits.
