SAN BERNARDINO (March 18, 2017) — CSUSB took three of four from No. 1 Humboldt State in its weekend series after taking a 3-1 game in the opener, before losing 6-3 in the final game.
The Coyotes improved to 15-11 overall and 10-8 CCAA and play at Cal State San Marcos on Sunday in a make-up doubleheader from Feb. 18. HSU is 21-4, 14-4.
Game 1: Coyotes 3, HSU 1
CSUSB scored three unanswered runs and capped the game with a two-run sixth to secure its third win in as many games against the nation's top-ranked team.
Trailing 1-0, the Coyotes got on the board in the fourth.
Amanda Herrera came through with a one-out double to right that scored
Taylor Ancona, who led off the inning with a single to short.
Then in the sixth,
Jessica Angulo singled up the middle and scored on a
Monica Maddox double to center. Maddox advanced to third on the throw, and
Morgan Ratliff laid down a bunt that scored Maddox.
That was senior LHP
Cassandra Williams needed for the victory. She threw seven strong innings and scattered six hits, and only one that went for extra bases. She had three strikeouts and issued one walk.
Ancona and Angulo each had two hits.
Williams had a hand in each victory with two wins and a save.
Game 2: HSU 6, Coyotes 4
The game was tied at 2-2 before HSU scored four runs on four hits in the seventh.
HSU's Breonna Bejaran hit two home runs to pace the Lumberjacks.
Ashley Leffingwell and
Kaylee Gemmell each hit solo home runs for the Coyotes.
Amanda Ramirez (6-5) threw 6 2/3 innings and took the loss. Five of the six runs were earned.
