Rough start costs Coyotes

SAN BERNARDINO (Feb. 18, 2017) — CSUSB may have won the second half in its game against Cal Poly Pomona, but the Coyotes struggled in the opening 20 minutes and it cost them in their 76-64 loss in CCAA basketball Saturday night at Coussoulis Arena.

The loss puts CSUSB at 14-8 overall and 11-7 in the CCAA, one full game behind the Broncos for fifth place in the CCAA. CSUSB takes on conference-leading UC San Diego on Thursday and hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills on Senior Night on Saturday.

CPP led the entire game and raced to a 24-11 lead through one quarter, and built a 22-point lead late in the first half. The Broncos led at the break, 42-23.

The story once again was senior Mya Johnson, who led the Coyotes with 21 points and grabbed six rebounds. Leelee Owens was next with nine, and Casie Johnson seven.

CSUSB trailed by double digits for most of the game, but got as close as nine twice in the closing moments.

CPP (14-10, 12-6) had five in double figures and was led by Chelsea Waddy-Blow with 17. Priscilla Brooks scored 15 with 13 rebounds.

Summer Ramsey had five assists with five points and six rebounds for CSUSB, and Genaya Wilkinson had five blocks with five rebounds and four points.
