SAN BERNARADINO (Feb. 17, 2017) — For the third straight season the Coyotes will play in the postseason.
Behind
Mya Johnson's 12
th double-double of the season featuring 17 points and 10 rebounds, the Coyotes grabbed the lead from the outset and then held off visiting Humboldt State 60-54 at Coussoulis Arena.
The Coyotes secured a berth and improved to 14-7 overall and 11-6 in the CCAA.
CSUSB entered play needing a victory to secure the berth and they got it by building a 25-point lead in the third quarter.
The Coyotes led 36-15 at halftime and when
Casie Johnson hit a jumper with 7:25 remaining in the third, they had their biggest lead of the game, 44-19.
But the Lumberjacks answered with three 3-pointers in the final quarter and drew within five on Kindall Murie's trey with 2:32 left and the score, 56-51.
CSUSB missed on three attempts on their next possession, and after an HSU errant three,
Mya Johnson drilled her third 3-pointer of the night and the Coyotes had a three-possession lead at 59-51 with 59 seconds left.
Mya Johnson finished 6 of 11 from the floor, 3 of 3 on 3s and dealt three assists.
Sabrea Coleman chipped in with 13 points, thanks to three 3s.
CSUSB finished 21 of 65 from the floor. It outrebounded HSU, 47-38.
The Coyotes return to Coussoulis Arena on Saturday night against Cal Poly Pomona.
HSU's Merritt Schoenhofer led her team with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
