CARSON (Feb. 11, 2017) — The Coyotes took one step closer toward a CCAA Tournament berth in their 67-59 victory at Cal State Dominguez Hills in CCAA basketball Saturday night.
CSUSB improved its record to 13-7 overall and 10-6 in the CCAA. It needs just one more victory or one more Humboldt State to secure the Coyotes' third straight CCAA Tournament berth. And wouldn't you know that next up on the Coyotes' schedule is a visit from the Lumberjacks on Friday night at Coussoulis Arena.
Mya Johnson showed yet again she is in the running for conference player of the year with another outstanding performance. She scored a game-high 23 points with 10 rebounds — her 11
th double-double on the year.
Genaya Wilkinson also shined on this occasion with 11 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks.
Five lead changes and six ties finally gave way in favor of the Coyotes late in the fourth quarter.
A 9-0 run by CSUDH tied the game at 55-all with 3:27 left, thanks to a pair of free throws from the Toros' Breanna DuBois.
Sabrea Coleman broke the tie on a jumper and Johnson drilled a 3-pointer that outdistanced CSUSB from the Toros. Those baskets were part of an 11-1 run in a 2 ½-minute stretch and the Coyotes had their victory.
CSUSB defended well, forcing CSUDH (6-17, 3-13) to shoot just 25.7 percent from the floor.
Coleman also scored in double figures with 10 points.
The victory over the Toros snapped a six-game losing streak in the series.
