LA JOLLA (Oct. 1, 2017) — UC San Diego struck with the game's only goal in the 79
th minute and cost the Coyotes a shot at victory in CCAA men's soccer Sunday.
What it means
CSUSB had its three-game winning streak end and now takes a 5-6 overall record and 3-3 CCAA record into this week's games against Sonoma State (Friday) and Humboldt State (Sunday). UCSD improved to 6-1-3, 4-1-1.
SOG falls short
CSUSB had just one shot on goal, thanks to
Danny Ortiz in the 41
st minute. Ortiz planted himself at the top of the circle, only to be denied by Tritons' GK Pedro Encis o. Ortiz had two shots, while
Humberto Salcedo, Tony Di Donato and
Francisco Sierra each totaled one.
Coach Says
"The game was tight from the first to the last whistle,'' head coach
Darren Leslie said. "Both teams had their spells in the game where they pushed forward to get an edge on the scoreboard. We forced their keeper into an unbelievable save just before the half. Jacob (Huber) came up with an equally impressive save of his own. The game came down to the next two big chances. They converted and we didn't. The work rate and commitment displayed from the boys was top class this weekend. If we can push forward with the same approach in our final five games, we'll put ourselves in great position to make the playoffs.''
