CHICO (Jan. 27, 2017) — Senior
Mya Johnson led CSUSB with her fifth straight double-double and eighth this season, but it wasn't enough in the Coyotes' 63-54 loss at Chico State on Friday night.
Johnson scored a game-high 19 points with 11 rebounds for CSUSB, which dropped to 9-6 overall and 6-5 CCAA. The Wildcats improved to 12-6, 7-5.
The Wildcats gained control with a 15-3 run in the second quarter and that was enough for the host squad to hold off the Coyotes. Johnson opened the quarter with a layup that put CSUSB ahead 14-13. Chico State then took over on its run with
Leelee Owens supplying the Coyotes with a 3-pointer in that stretch.
Chico State stretched its lead to 14 with 2:02 in the third, but CSUSB made a run at the lead in the fourth.
Down 50-42 with 6:47 left, CSUSB struck with an 8-0 run thanks to two field goals by Johnson and tied the game at 50-50 on her layup with 4:45 left.
The Wildcats hit 5 of 6 from the line down the stretch and a 3-pointer from Tyler Prange proved critical.
CSUSB shot 32.8 percent from the field on 19 of 58 shots.
Courtney Coleman scored 10, and
Sabrea Coleman added eight.
The Coyotes complete the weekend Saturday night at Stanislaus State.
Chico State was led by Whitney Branham's 15 points.
