SAN FRANCISCO (Jan. 14, 2017) — For the second straight night senior
Mya Johnson produced a 20-point, 10-rebound night and her Coyotes benefited in their 56-52 victory over host San Francisco State in CCAA basketball Saturday night.
Johnson earned game-high honors with 22 points and 12 rebounds, and teammate
Casie Johnson also secured a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards for CSUSB, now 8-4 overall and 5-3 CCAA.
CSUSB and the Gators (2-14, 0-9) played a tight game with the largest lead of the game at seven points when the Coyotes led 21-14 with 3:11 left in the first half.
The game had seven ties and seven lead changes until CSUSB forged ahead with 2:26 left in the contest.
Sabrea Coleman hit a pair of free throws that broke a 50-50 tie, and
Casie Johnson followed with a tip-in and CSUSB led 54-50 with a minute to go and held on for the win.
Despite shooting just 28.6 percent from the field, CSUSB outscored the Gators on second-chance shots (14-3), thanks to 22 offensive rebounds.
Leelee Owens led in assists (four) and steals (three).
Mya Johnson's double-double was her fifth on the year, and it was
Casie Johnson's first.
Kaitlin DaDalt led SFSU with 11 points.
The two teams meet again Wednesday night at Coussoulis Arena. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
