Box Score 2 SEASIDE (April 9, 2016) -- For the first time in nine seasons the Coyotes polished off a sweep at Cal State Monterey on Saturday, winning 5-3 and 8-6 in CCAA softball.
The Coyotes (24-21 overall, 15-15 CCAA) have won five straight games and six of their last seven heading into Sunday's series finale. First pitch is 11 a.m.
Game 1: Coyotes 5, Cal State Monterey Bay 3
CSUSB totaled just four hits in the opener, but each one of them a role in its four runs, thanks to two home runs by
Amanda Herrera and a solo shot by
Kaylee Gemmell.
Herrera gave CSUSB a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run shot over the center-field wall. Three innings later, Gemmell connected on a two-out shot to center and CSUSB led 3-0.
CSUMB tied the game at 3-3 with one run in the fourth and two in the fifth, but Herrera had one more big moment that paid off.
After
Jessica Angulo led off with a single up the middle, the Riverside native again connected on a long-ball, this time with a blast to left and CSUSB led 5-3.
Amanda Ramirez threw four innings and scattered seven hits, but allowed just two runs. Junior
Cassandra Williams came on in relief and earned the victory in three innings with five strikeouts and just two hits.
Game 2: Coyotes 8, Cal State Monterey Bay 6
Coach
Jim Maier's crew got rollling in the second, sending 11 to the plate and making it pay off with seven runs on five hits.
Gemmell hit a one-out ground rule double to right center that scored
Morgan Ratliff, and
Caitlyn Olan followed with an RBI-single through the right side for a 2-2 tie.
Ashley Leffingwell walked and
Taylor Ancona made the score 3-2 with a single up the middle. Williams helped her cause on a two-run single up the middle and a sac bunt from
Monica Maddox extended the lead to 6-2.
Ratliff came up for the second time in the inning and singled in Williams for a 7-2 lead.
Williams added the eighth and final run in the seventh.
Meanwhile on the mound, Williams went the distance, giving up 10 hits with six strikeouts.
The Apple Valley native needs just five strikeouts to break her single-season record of 197 set last season.
Williams and Gemmell each had two hits.
