SAN BERNARDINO (April 23, 2016) -- Doubleheader sweeps are hard to come by in the CCAA and CSUSB got a big one Saturday against visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Coyotes scored 11 runs through the first four innings in the opener, then used a come-from-behind effort in the second for a twinbill sweep over the Toros, 16-4 and 5-4.
CSUSB (20-21, 15-14 CCAA) takes a game and a half lead over the Toros into this week's series against South-leading Cal Poly Pomona, beginning Thursday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.
Game 1: Coyotes 16, CSUDH 5
Coach
Dave Martinez received multiple-RBI games from six Coyotes, who coasted the one-side victory.
Ryan Rich went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, and
Dylan Lohman had a pair of doubles. Joining in the slugfest was
William Ouellette, who homered in the seventh.
Leading 5-1 through three innings, CSUSB broke the game wide open in the fourth, sending 11 to the plate and coming through with six runs on four hits.
Grant Buchanan had a two-out, two-run single and Lohman connected on a run-scoring double.
Lohman earned his second RBI-double after Ouellette's home run, and CSUSB added three runs in the eight, keyed by
Ryan Cooper's two-run double.
Sophomore
Brian Lockey (3-4) went six innings for the win. He gave up five hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Jordan Kelly threw three innings of relief with three k's.
Game 2: Coyotes 5, CSUDH 4 7 innings
Down 4-2 entering their final at-bat, the Coyotes came through in spectacular fashion with a three-run seventh for a walk-off win.
Damion Edmonds got the rally going with a one-out single up the middle. Buchanan pushed Edmonds to second on a single, and Rich added the third straight single, scoring Edmonds and the Coyotes trailed 4-3.
Two batters later,
Jake Caron singled up the middle to score Buchanan and Rich and the expected walk-off celebration developed on the basepaths.
Buchanan went 3-for-4, while Ouellette gave the Coyotes a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run double.
Austin Casillas threw 4 2/3 innings in relief of
Noah Simon. Casillas, now 1-5, allowed four hits, but kept the Toros off the scoreboard to give his teammates a shot at a comeback.
CSUDH dropped to 21-21, 14-16.
