SAN BERNARDINO (April 22, 2016) — CSUSB took care of Cal State San Marcos in a CCAA doubleheader Friday afternoon, winning 4-3 in eight innings and 12-3 in five to keep the Coyotes' postseason aspirations alive going into the final day of regular season play.
CSUSB (30-23, 21-17 CCAA) secured a 30-win season for only the fourth time in the last 18 years and take on the Cougars (10-34, 7-27) on Saturday on Senior Day.
Game 1: Coyotes 4, CSU San Marcos 3 8 innings:
Jessica Brown provided the offensive punch the Coyotes desperately needed with a two-run home run in the fifth and a walk-off double in the eighth for the win.
The Cougars used the long ball to secure all of their runs — one from Brogan Hoenisch in the second, and solo shots by Robyn Alvara in the fourth and sixth.
Down 1-0, CSUSB tied the game in the third when Brown was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Two innings later and trailing 2-1, Brown delivered a deep shot to left center that scored
Melissa Roberts.
CSUSM then tied the game in the sixth and the game went into extra innings.
In the eighth,
Kaylee Gemmell led off with a double down the right-field line, and
Caelan Smith was hit by a pitch. One out later, Brown came through with her double down the right-field line.
Coyotes freshman
Amanda Ramirez went five inning with the no-decision with a career-high six strikeouts. Junior LHP
Cassandra Williams (19-14 overall) came on in relief in the sixth and had seven strikeouts.
Game 2: Coyotes 12, CSU San Marcos 3 5 innings: The Coyotes scored nine runs in the third inning to win going away.
Amanda Herrera capped the third inning with a three-run homer to left, and
Taylor Ancona had a three-run HR of her own, this one to center for the nine-run, seven-hit inning.
Angulo went 3-for-3 and Herrera had four RBI. Roberts and
Monica Maddox each had two hits.
Ramirez earned the start in the second and gave up six hits with two strikeouts.
CSUSB entered the day a game behind Sonoma State in the fourth and final spot for next week's CCAA Tournament. SSU defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 4-2 in their opener Friday.
