SAN BERNARDINO (April 23, 2016) — Senior Day belonged to the Coyotes in all ways in their regular-season finale against Cal State San Marcos, winning 4-3 and 13-10 at Coyote Park on Saturday.
CSUSB closed the regular season 32-23 overall and 23-17 in the CCAA. The Coyotes finished fifth in the conference and will not participate in this week's conference tournament in Stockton. They are ranked No. 9 in this week's NCAA West Region; eight teams advance to the national tournament with the NCAA announcing its tournament field May 2.
Game 1: Coyotes 4, CSU San Marcos 3: Senior
Melissa Roberts' sacrifice fly to left in the bottom of the sixth turned out to be the game winner.
CSUSB grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third on three hits and one error.
Taylor Ancona walked to lead off the inning, and Roberts followed with a double to left.
Monica Maddox then followed with an RBI-single through the left side and two batters later,
Amanda Herrera singled to short to score Roberts.
CSUSM answered with three of its own in the sixth, but its 3-2 lead didn't last with CSUSB coming through in its half of the inning.
Herrera singled, and
Kaylee Gemmell followed with a single that was bobbled by the right fielder, scoring pinch-runner and senior
Arianna Hernandez all the way from first.
Four batters later, Roberts came through with the game-winning sac fly to score pinch-runner
Amanda Fitzgerald, who came on for
Caitlyn Olan, who walked.
Junior LHP
Cassandra Williams (20-14) through seven strong innings with four strikeouts and just seven hits. Only one of her three runs allowed was earned.
Both Herrera and Maddox had two hits.
Game 2: Coyotes 13, CSU San Marcos 10
Jessica Brown ripped two home runs and drove in five runs, with freshman
Morgan Ratliff earning two hits and three RBI.
Jessica Angulo followed with two RBI.
Brown connected on a three-run HR in the third, and came through with a solo shot in the sixth. She finished the season with 11 homers.
Jackie DeLoza earned the victory in relief of
Amanda Ramirez. DeLoza threw 1 2/3 innings with Ramirez re-entering in the seventh in which she earned her first save of the season.
Ratliff had three hits with Herrera, Brown and Maddox all earning two hits apiece.
Herrera finished a strong weekend and an even better second half, earning 36 hits in her last 73 at-bats.
