CARSON (April 22, 2016) — Opportunistic play presented itself in style for the Coyotes, who defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 4-3 in the second game of their four-game CCAA weekend series Friday afternoon at Toro Field.
William Ouellette keyed the Coyotes with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate and then switched gloves and positions to earn his sixth save of the season for CSUSB, now 18-21 overall and 14-14 CCAA.
The Coyotes grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third, thanks to a leadoff home run to left by
Brian Lockey. Two outs later,
Andrew Lopez singled to left on an 0-2 count to score
Damion Edmonds, who singled to center.
CSUDH added one run in the third, then two in the fourth off Coyotes starter
Tyler Wells and the game remained in 2-1 favor of the Toros until the eighth.
Ouellette singled to the pitcher, then advanced to third on an error when Rich Rich reached base on a dropped fly in left. Ouellette then scored on a wild pitch by Toros reliever Peter Fierros, and Rich got to third on the play.
Dylan Lohman sent a sacrifice fly to right and the Coyotes had their 4-3 lead.
Austin Casillas came on in relief of Wells in the eighth. The Toros got the potential-tying run to third with two outs, but Casillas struck out Johnny Palmer to end the threat.
Then in the ninth, Ouellette got a strikeout and a fly-out before lead-off hitter Brandon Polizzi reached on a walk. But the next batter Nick Morelli flew out to center to end the game.
Wells (4-4) struck out four and allowed seven hits. All three runs were earned.
Lopez and Lockey each had two hits.
The Coyotes and Toros are at Fiscalini Field for a Saturday doubleheader that begins at 11 a.m. The doubleheader features a nine-inning opener with a seven-inning game to follow.
