LA JOLLA (April 16, 2016) -- CSUSB answered back from a 10-run loss in the opener with its 4-0 win in the series finale Saturday afternoon.
CSUSB (28-23, 19-17 CCAA) completes the regular season this Friday and Saturday against Cal State San Marcos. The Coyotes are gunning for just their fourth 30-win season in the last 18 years when they face the Cougars.
UCSD is 31-19, 21-15.
Game 1: UCSD 13, Coyotes 3 5 innings UC San Diego scored 11 runs and sent 16 batters to the plate to win going away and was called in the fifth inning.
Jessica Angulo went 2-for-2 and
Amanda Herrera and
Kaylee Gemmell each doubled in the loss.
Game 2: CSUSB 4, UC San Diego 0 Cassandra Williams did not allow a runner past second base and allowed one hit through four innings for the Coyotes to secure a split on the day and in the series.
All of UCSD's six hits were singles. Williams struck out seven and issued just one walk.
CSUSB grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third with RBI from
Caelan Smith and
Caitlyn Olan. Angulo added a run-scoring single in the sixth that scored
Monica Maddox. Herrera helped put the game out of reach with a solo home run in the seventh.
Angulo finished her day perfect at the plate with a 3-for-3 effort. Olan added two hits.
