SAN BERNARDINO (April 16, 2016) -- One pitch made the difference in Saturday's CCAA doubleheader between the Coyotes and visiting Cal State East Bay.
Reliever
William Ouellette came in from his shortstop position and with the bases loaded, he induced a game-ending 6-4-3 double play to Troy Resch and secured a 2-1 victory over the Pioneers at Fiscalini Field.
Damion Edmonds produced all the scoring the Coyotes needed in the victory with a two-run single to center in the fourth inning. With two outs,
Jordan Simon singled through the left side and
Brian Lockey followed with a single to first to put runners at first and third with Edmonds at the plate.
Lockey then stole second, and that helped Edmonds, who had two runners in scoring position and came through with a clutch hit.
Starter RHP
Tyler Wells was cruising with a three-hitter through eight innings until he got to the ninth. He walked the lead-off hitter on five pitches, then struck out Marcus Wise for his eighth of the game. But back-to-back singles loaded the bases and brought head coach
Dave Martinez out of the dugout for the pitching change.
Ouellette came through with his fifth save of the season with just one pitch, and shortstop
Dylan Lohman, who had been at third, made the quick toss to second baseman
Jordan Simon, who finished off the game with the assist to first baseman
Brian Lockey for the win.
CSUSB got two hits each from
Ryan Rich and Lockey, with Lohman and Simon earning the rest of the Coyotes' seven hits.
Wells improved to 3-4 on 106 pitches and lowered his ERA to 1.31.
Myles Babbit accounted for the Pioneers' only run of the game on a single to shallow center on a drawn-in infield that scored Chris Porter in the fifth.
Game 2: CSU East Bay 21, Coyotes 5 CSUSB allowed its most runs of the season as the Pioneers totaled 25 hits and scored in every inning except the fourth and sixth.
Andrew Lopez keyed the Coyotes' attack with a two-run home run in the first. Lopez had three hits and three RBI and
Grant Buchanan had three hits.
CSUSB dropped to 17-19, 12-12 CCAA.
