Box Score 3 SAN BERNARDINO (March 26, 2016) -- Freshman right-hander
Amanda Ramirez stepped up with a two-hit shutout as CSUSB snapped its 10-game losing streak with a 7-0 win over Sonoma State in CCAA play Saturday.
CSUSB lost 4-3 in 12 innings in a game that picked up after being suspended through nine innings. The 7-0 win was the opener of Saturday's scheduled doublheader and the Coyotes lost the series finale 9-3.
The Coyotes, now 18-19 overall and 13-15 CCAA, step outside of conference play for the final time when it takes part in the Tournament of Champions, hosted by Stanislaus State beginning Friday.
Sonoma State 4, Coyotes 3 (12 innings, continuation of Friday's second game)Caitlyn Olan led her team with a two-run home run in the second inning, but CSUSB had trouble with timely hitting in the extra-inning game.
SSU's Carlie Daniel supplied the game-winning hit on a double to right center in the 12th.
Kaylee Gemmell had three hits for CSUSB, and
Jessica Angulo, Olan and
Amanda Herrera all had two hits for CSUSB.
Cassandra Williams took the hard-luck loss in relief. She struck out six, walked only one and allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings.
Game 1: Coyotes 7, Sonoma State 0Ramirez was outstanding in her seven innings. Both hits were singles and she allowed only one Seawolf to reach base after the second inning and retired the final 10 in order.
Herrera gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead in the first on sac fly. CSUSB then added three runs in both the fourth and sixth to win going away.
In the fourth,
Monica Maddox supplied a two-run single to left that brought in
Melissa Roberts and
Amanda Fitzgerald.
Then in the sixth, Gemmell sent a one-out double to right center that scored Maddox and Angulo.
Herrera went 3-for-3, while teammates Angulo, Gemmell,
Morgan Ratliff and Maddox all had two hits.
Ratliff doubled in the first.
Game 2: Sonoma State 9, Coyotes 3CSUSB committed seven errors and the Seawolves took advantage for their third win in the series.
Jessica Brown clubbed a two-run home run in the eighth that scored Olan, who doubled.
Olan and Maddox each had two hits.
