ST. GEORGE, Utah (Feb. 5, 2016) -- Junior RHP
Tyler Wells threw two-hit shut-out ball over six innings, but host Dixie State rallied with a five-run seventh and defeated the Coyotes 5-3 in the first of a four-game series Friday night.
The Coyotes (2-2) and Red Storm (1-0) play a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday.
Wells, this week's CCAA Pitcher of the Week, did not give up a hit until the fourth and shut out the Red Storm with eight strikeouts, two walks and a hit batter in six innings.
But Dixie State sent eight batters to the plate in the seventh against relievers
Kamden Haglund and
Joshua Murtha and scored five runs -- all earned.
The Coyotes grabbed the lead early, thanks to a three-run third inning on three Red Storm errors without a hit.
Damion Edmonds earned the only RBI of the inning on a sac fly to right.
Edmonds,
Andrew Lopez and
Dillon Fahr all singled for the Coyotes.
Dixie State pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts.
