Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO (Feb. 27, 2016) — Amanda Herrera came through in style Saturday afternoon and the able arm of
Cassandra Williams shined, too, in the Coyotes' doubleheader sweep over Stanislaus State, 3-1 and 5-4.
The victories supplied head coach
Jim Maier with the 500
th and 501
st wins in his career, but the second-year Coyote coach would be the first to say he was more proud of his team improving to 13-8 overall and 8-4 in the CCAA.
Stanislaus State dropped to 8-9, 5-7.
Game 1: Coyotes 3, Warriors 1Herrera delivered the game-winning hit when CSUSB rallied with three runs in the sixth inning after trailing 1-0.
Jessica Angulo opened the inning with a single to center, and
Caelan Smith reached on a hit by pitch. Herrera deftly placed a double through the right side of the infield for two runs. Three batters later,
Kaylee Gemmell supplied a two-out double to right for a 3-1 lead.
Williams went the distance and struck out seven and issued just one walk with a hit by pitch. She allowed six hits.
Monica Maddox had two hits and Williams had the other.
Game 2: Coyotes 5, Warriors 4Herrera came through again with an odd play that resulted in a walk-off win in the seventh.
With the game tied at 4-4 and Ratliff on third, Herrera hit a high pop-up on the right side of the infield. What should have been a play by either the first baseman or second baseman, became an error when shortstop Morgan Balestreri raced across the infield to make the play.
The ball bounced off her glove, and Ratliff easily scored.
Ratliff ripped a three-run home run in the third and added a double for a three-hit game. Angula had an RBI single in the first.
Williams struck out five and walked one in five innings to improve to 11-4.
The Coyotes are at Cal State Dominguez Hills next week.
