SEASIDE (Dec. 3, 2016) — A solid night of shooting, led by senior
Mya Johnson's 20 points, put the Coyotes in control in their 64-50 victory over host Cal State Monterey Bay in CCAA women's basketball Saturday night.
Johnson also pulled down 11 rebounds for the Coyotes, who won their fourth straight game and improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the CCAA.
CSUSB hit 46.3 percent from the field on 25 of 53 shooting and led by double digits for all but 38 seconds in the second half.
Johnson gave the Coyotes their largest lead of the game on a fast-break layup that put her team ahead 53-32 with 48 seconds left in the third quarter. She was 8 of 19 from the field, hit 4 of 6 free throws and five of her 11 rebounds were on the offensive end.
Junior
Norissa Sanders was the only other Coyote in double figures with 10 points.
Courtney Coleman scored nine points on three 3-pointers and
Sabrea Coleman added eight, and
Casie Johnson six.
CSSUB strung a 14-5 run midway through the opening quarter and earned their first 10-point lead on a layup from Sanders with 2:35 remaining and the Coyotes up 19-9.
CSUMB got as close as five on two occasions after that when CSUSB went into halftime leading 34-23.
The Coyotes are off for Fall Quarter finals and return to the court Dec. 16 at UC San Diego.
CSUMB dropped to 3-5, 0-2.
