POMONA (Dec. 17, 2016) — CSUSB made a run at earning its first win in eight seasons at Kellogg Gym, but could not get over the hump in a 58-49 loss to Cal Poly Pomona in CCAA play Saturday night.
Mya Johnson led the Coyotes (5-3, 2-2 CCAA) with 12 points, and
Leelee Owens and
Norissa Sanders each had nine.
CSUSB never led against the Broncos and fell behind by 11 at the close of the first quarter. But over the next 20 minutes they battled back and closed to within two points on four occasions.
Johnson put in a layup that cut CPP's lead 47-45 with 5:42 left in the game. CPP answered back with a 7-0 run over the next three minutes and then extended the lead to as many as 11 points in the final seconds.
CSUSB was 16 of 45 from the floor, and Owens scored all three of CSUSB's 3-pointers. CPP held the advantage at the line, outscoring CSUSB 21-14.
The Coyotes are off for the Christmas break and return to Coussoulis Arena on Dec. 29 when they play host to Stanislaus State.
CPP improved to 6-5, 4-1 and was led by Jackie Ricketson's 14 points.
