th in the CCAA is now one game away from playing for a conference championship and an NCAA Tournament berth. The fifth-seeded Coyotes struck gold with a goal in the 84
th minute from
Humberto Salcedo as his team defeated fourth-seed Chico State 1-0 in men's soccer Tuesday night.
CSUSB (10-5-1) now takes on conference-leading UC San Diego in the CCAA semifinals Friday afternoon in Turlock. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m.
Salcedo broke loose on a takeaway dribble down the right flank. He fired a low shot inside the near post for the difference maker. It was his third goal on the season.
The Wildcats (8-6-3) out-shot the Coyotes 13-6 with seven shots on goal to CSUSB's five.
Jacob Huber had all seven saves for the shutout.
The game was physical with six yellows called on CSUSB and one on Chico State. Interim head coach
Darren Leslie was called for a red card in the 89
th minute and was ejected.
The game Friday against the Tritons is a rematch that CSUSB desires similar outcome. The Coyotes defeated UCSD 3-1 last Thursday at Coyote Premier Field.
