SAN BERNARDINO (Jan. 2, 2016) -- Junior guard
Everett Turner carried the Coyotes with 26 points in their 84-81 loss to Humboldt State on Saturday night in CCAA men's basketball.
The Coyotes (3-7, 0-6 CCAA) came back from an 11-point deficit with 5:46 after trailing 77-66, but fell just short against the Lumberjacks (11-1, 5-1).
Back-to-back 3-pointers from
Zeke DeBlase and
Juan Martinez cut the HSU lead to five, and Turner added a jumper and CSUSB trailed 77-74 with 3:38 left.
The Coyotes then cut the lead to one twice -- on baskets by Martinez and a dunk from
Desi Barmore -- then earned the lead on a pair of free throws from Martinez that put CSUSB up 80-79 with 1:16 remaining.
HSU answered back on a pair of free throws from Nikhil Lizotte to regain the lead again at 81-80 with 39 seconds remaining.
CSUSB had a shot at the lead, but turned the ball on a play inside, and after HSU got the ball back, Thomas Witzel hit two more throws for an 83-80 lead with 21 seconds left.
DeBlase's 3-point effort was off and HSU padded the lead to four on another Witzel free throw wtih 11 seconds left.
Despite hitting only 34.9 percent from the floor, the Coyotes remained in the game thanks to their 28-of-38 effort from the line.
Turner scored 18 first-half points to lead the Coyotes, who trailed 45-43 at the break.
All five Lumberjacks starter scored in double figures. They were led by Tyras Rattler's 17. Rakim Brown had 14 points with 15 rebounds.
Barmore earned his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
CSUSB is on the road next week with games at Sonoma State and San Francisco State.
