ROHNERT PARK (Jan. 8, 2016) -- Outside shooting and an ability to convert turnovers into points made the Coyotes winners Friday night in their 60-57 victory over host Sonoma State in CCAA men's basketball.
The Coyotes (4-7, 1-6) snapped their six-game conference losing streak with 11 3-pointers and making 17 SSU turnovers into 16 points. For the second straight game junior
Everett Turner led CSUSB in scoring with 13 points, while dishing out five assists. Sophomore
Darryl Adigwu added 11 in a starting role and
Zeke DeBlase and
Juan Martinez each had 10.
Both Turner and Adigwu had three 3-pointers, and DeBlase and Martinez each added two against the Seawolves (7-5, 2-4).
CSUSB grabbed its largest lead of the night when Adigwu hit a 3-pointer that put the Coyotes ahead 55-46 with 5:31 remaining in the game.
But the Seawolves are a tough team to beat in their home gym and they proved it late. SSU hit a mini, six-point run in a two-minute stretch to cut CSUSB's lead to three (55-52) with 3:01 left.
DeBlase then stopped the run with his final three of the night to push CSUSB back up by six, but SSU answered again.
A pair of free throws form Andy Mitchell and a three-pointer from James Davis slimmed the Coyotes lead to 58-57 with 2:01 left.
Both teams than missed on getting and edge on their next two possessions until Turner hit two free throws for the final margin wtih five seconds left.
Turner then got a steal with one second left to end the game.
Senior
Desi Barmore had seven points off the bench with five boards.
CSUSB also was solid from the line, hitting nine of 10 shots.
SSU was led by Davis' game-high 15 points. No other Seawolf had more than nine points.
CSUSB is at San Francisco State on Saturday night.
